Chapter 13

Zolac stood alone in his suite. The balcony doors were open, and ocean sounds drifted inside, but the pitch-black night hid the usual view. Only the sounds indicated the presence of the waves. Zolac poured a drink and stepped out onto the balcony. Everything was proceeding as planned. The report from Moray and Sarto in California, after their scouting mission, pleased him greatly. Other reports coming in from the guerilla squads massing in major US cities were also gratifying. Not much longer now, and the leader’s plan would be full-speed ahead, the United States engulfed in fire.

The door opened behind him. Zolac turned to see one of his guards approaching.

“Plotkin is here, sir.”

“For what?”

“He says he needs to speak to you about a problem.”

“He can talk to Elisa. Remind him we have a chain of command here.”

“He says he has spoken to her.”

“And?”

“And now he needs to speak to you because he’s convinced the American is a problem and she doesn’t see it that way.”

Zolac frowned. “Send him in.”

The guard retreated.

Presently the bald Russian joined him on the balcony. The ocean rumbled in the distance. All they looked into was a black void of furious sound.

“Is something wrong, Viktor?”

The Russian outlined his concerns about Jake Cooper, the new man. “Elisa won’t listen,” he said. “I hope you will. We’ve come too far for somebody to derail us now.”

“You have a point. For all we know, he’s genuine but working for the Americans. You heard him. Whoever has the money has his loyalty. But he didn’t go for the safe.”

“We can’t take the chance, Mr. Zolac.”

Zolac sighed. He finished his drink but made a sour face. “I liked him. It’s too bad, but I think you’re right. Don’t do it on the property. Get him on the boat, and make sure you’re over deep water. No comebacks, Plotkin.”

The Russian stifled a smile.
